The alphabet, axe, bone, bicycle, ink and internet: tools are the things that made us humans into the beings we are today. My thesis is a call to designers to start creating their own (design)tools, instead of relying on tools provided by big software companies.
“There is no such thing as ‘digital media.’ There is only software— as applied to media (or ‘content’). Or, to put this differently: for users who only interact with media content through application software, the ‘properties’ of digital media are defined by the particular software as opposed to solely being contained in the actual content (i.e., inside digital files).” — Lev Manovich in Software Takes Command
The design is based on this principle that a digital medium consists of the file itself and the software window you view it through. I created a specific thesis file format, that allows itself to be opened in multiple software applications, each resulting in a different appearance.
