Strand Electric

Self-Initiated

Strand Electric is a visual collective formed by me and a couple of friends. We do visual projects often related to sound and music. We are interested in a mix of analog and digital technologies, and work with improvised as well as precomposed images.

See our Facebook page for the latest updates and come see us live! Check the dates at our website:
www.strand-electric.com

The video on the right is our live visual set for the album Ampul by the netherlands. Visuals are made live on location, using a mix of analog (old VHS tapes and a NES) input and digital effects (Processing & Arduino for a custom controller).

Other members of Strand Electric: Jolijn Ceelen, Jorian Bekker and Herman van den Muijsenberg.

A Chance Operation

3rd year Typography

A dice was used to formulate restrictions that created the assignment. My publication needed to be a novel, with a size of 17.8×23.8cm, using only content from Ubuweb and no binding. As content, I chose A Chance Operation: The John Cage Tribute. This is a double CD with covers of Cage his work by friends and admirers. The CD was cut-up in small parts and is supposed to be shuffled, creating new compositions everytime. I wrote an application that analysed each audio file and transcribed that to text. The transcription was done using so called Markov Chains, using the classic I Ching (which was used by Cage to create randomness in his work) as input text. Every word represents a second of audio, every extra space one second of silence.

Book. 17.8×23.8cm. 175 pages.

UFO Probability

3rd year Audio/Visual Design

Assignment was to produce a completely (internet) data driven documentary. Using the NUFORC archive from 2010, data on UFO sightings was collected and analysed. On twelve UFO sighting locations a UFO sighting probability is calculated and combined with a live webcam feed. The installation gathers live weather, time, date and location data and calculates the possibility of seeing an UFO at that exact time.

(Little tip for those wishing to see a UFO: scan the nightsky of California between 23:00 & 24:00 on the 4th of July—preferably somewhere where it's a nice and cool 21° Celcius—and who knows, you might get lucky...)

Installation. Live projection on wall.

Black Surge–Encrypted Identity

3rd year Minor Design Critique

Encrypted Identity for the (fictional) Black Surge conference 2012. Campaign for the city of Caracas, Venezuela. Design is based on the 'hill-economy' that runs in the slums around Caracas. A lack of infrastructure and high gang violence lead to product prices that get more expensive the higher you go on the hill. My invitation was a water bottle, presented as a kind of 'new gold', and only using a filled bottle the encrypted message can be read from the poster.

Water bottle. 0.5L

Kirtland

3rd year Minor Design Critique

Smuggle Assignment. Based on a document from the cryptome website. My document is about nuclear weapon storage locations in the US. While there have been only 2 real usages for this weapon, the US still maintains the largest collection of nuclear weapons in the world. This publication focused on Kirtland Air Force Base, the largest storage in the world. Still now, 8 billion dollars a year flows into this base. Based on the almost unreal projects conducted here, I decided to transform Kirtland into the first nuclear themepark in the world. Tickets were available for a short time on ebay.com and on the Kirtland website this brochure could be downloaded.

Booklet. 11×15cm – 16 pages.
Map. A1 foldable to A4.

Quadra Orbis–Band Identity

2nd year Graphic Design

(Fictional) Band concept & identity. The concept for our band's music was based on sampling everything around you, to capture a feeling you have at a certain setting and/or moment. During a trip to London, we recorded audio samples and photographed 360° panorama's on locations we thought were interesting. Our band only releases singles, where each single would represent one of those locations. The logo shape finds itself between a perfect circle and a perfect square, and varies in roughness and color based on the location that inspired the song.

In combination with Jacob Hoving.

Route

1st year Graphic Design

Visual interpretation of the route I follow every day from home to the academy. I was suprised with the fact that every single business or office I passed, no matter how small or local, turned out to have it's own website. This is my virtual route which can be taken completely inside Google search.

Poster. 29.7×140 cm.
